About

Marina Papadopoulou is a psychology graduate from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds a master's degree from the "Public Health and Health Policy" program of the Medical School at AUTH and then pursued a master's in "Social Psychology - Research Methods and Applications in the Community". She has worked in the field as a psychologist in municipal services and, in recent years, worked at a Special Therapy Center, taking on families, children, and teenagers. The population she primarily worked with includes families with children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ASD, ADHD, etc. Besides neurodivergent children, she managed requests for managing anxiety and childhood phobias, dealing with school bullying, self-esteem issues, relationships with parents and peers, among others. Parents, on the other hand, often sought help for issues related to setting boundaries and communication and for support in managing everyday life problems. Her therapeutic approach is based on the principles of Systemic Therapy, as she follows a 4-year training to obtain the title of Systemic psychotherapist. Through her experience in consulting on autism, she cultivated an approach that draws from the literature on the acceptance of neurodivergence, against the medical-centric model. In matters of family relations, her approach is based on understanding the functioning and communication patterns of the family, empowering the parental role, and developing communication channels among family members. Having trained in addiction therapy, she treats the issue of de-addiction as a social rather than a biological disease and focuses on mobilizing the individual to create new meanings away from the addictive substance or behavior. In counseling teenagers and young adults, she relies mainly on empowerment and encouragement, with elements of psychoeducation in psychosocial skills for healthy and adaptive management of life's challenges. She has attended a multitude of seminars on child psychology, counseling, play therapy, as well as themes for individuals belonging to marginalized social groups.
